Noel is a member of the firm’s tech and engineering practice groups. He has experience of UK, European and US patent prosecution in a wide variety of technical fields including telecommunications, electronics, automotive and other areas within mechanical engineering. He enjoys the variety of being able to work for a range of clients, both in breadth of technology and scale of business.
Before joining the profession, Noel worked for over 20 years as a mechanical engineer, gaining considerable technical experience within the automotive and aviation industries. This included working with patent attorneys to gain intellectual property protection for his own ideas, and working as a member of a combined technical and commercial team to manage aspects of the intellectual property portfolio of a major UK manufacturer.
Noel’s engineering career also involved liaising with external client companies and regulatory bodies. This means that he knows the importance of understanding client needs and priorities, and how to successfully represent these needs before a regulatory body, including in challenging circumstances. This has a direct parallel with the patent profession, in which the attorney represents the client’s needs before a regulatory body such as the European Patent Office.
He finds that his engineering experience also helps his work as a patent advisor because he has significant experience using a systems engineering approach to problem solving. Here, the objective is to not only understand the specifics of an invention, but to also understand its place within a wider system. This aids identification of the key features of the invention to protect, whilst also aiding identification of potential future difficulties that may occur during this process. Mitigation strategies, in the form of claim structures, can therefore be put in place at an earlier stage, protecting the client’s interests.
Noel also understands that engineers and patent attorneys can at times, be two professions separated by a common language. Having worked in both professions, he understands the mindset of each, and is therefore well placed to explain the patent process to a prospective client.
Noel read engineering at the University of Cambridge and has an MBA from Loughborough University. He is a chartered engineer.
Outside of work, Noel enjoys travel and spending time with his family. This includes Ginny, a wayward but very friendly labrador.
