Strong Growth in UK companies Seeking Patent Protection Abroad

April 02, 2015

Recently released official figures reveal a significant increase in the number of international patent applications being filed by UK companies.

Figures recently released from the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), the organisational body which oversees the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), have revealed yet another year on year increase in the total number of international patent applications (PCT applications) filed around the world. Closer inspection of the figures reveals a significant increase in the number of PCT applications filed by UK applicants.

The UK is one of the top 10 PCT filing countries and in 2014 it recorded the second fastest growth in the number of PCT applications filed out of all the top 10 countries. The UK’s rate of increase in PCT filings (9%) was ahead of the US (7%) and was second only to China (18%).
