Single trans-Tasman Patent Process Approved

October 23, 2013

Approval of a single patent application and examination process for New Zealand and Australia has been announced by the government of New Zealand today.

The government of New Zealand has announced its approval of a single patent application process for New Zealand and Australia. The announcement can be found here on the website of the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand. Under the new system there will be a single examination process which will eventually result in separate patents for both Australia and New Zealand. The details of the new system are still being worked out. According to this page on the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment website, a single examiner will examine both applications under the laws of Australia and New Zealand.
